Brian ShiozawaMy name is Brian Shiozawa and I am the Senator-Elect for the Utah Senate District 8. I was pleased to receive the majority vote of District 8 residents on November 6th. I am overwhelmed by the amount of support I have received from SD 8 residents.  This was a great victory for our community and our state and I am honored to serve as your State Senator.

I have been an Emergency physician for over twenty years. I know what it is like to be a patient and how to treat patients. I also know how important serving in public office is in our state.  During the last session on Capitol Hill I fought for important legislation regarding patient advocacy, public health, and preserving the doctor-patient relationship. This is an historic time for all of us, due to the Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act.  We need informed, responsible legislators who are willing to stand and fight for health care reform, affordable insurance, medical liability tort reform, and reducing the cost of defensive medicine.

In Senate District 8 we are fortunate to have good schools and good teachers.  We need to support them with adequate funding, smaller class sizes, up to date technology, and performance measures that are reasonable and accurate.  In addition to improving competency in math, science, and literature, I support art and athletic programs for students.  As a parent I have volunteered in the class room, served as a team physician, and run with (or behind) the local cross country team.  I recognize how important the parent-teacher partnership is for the success of our classes.

As a small business owner, I know how important sound fiscal policy is.  It is just as important for managing our State programs. I support Utah's balanced budget. To stimulate and support small business, we need the lowest taxes possible.  As citizens we need efficient, responsible management of our government programs. We need responsible leaders who listen.

Over the past few months leading up to the election on Nov. 6th, my campaign and I have reached out to thousands and thousands of amazing SD 8 residents. It has been an honor to meet and listen to you and hear about what is important to you in this election.  I am proud to represent the great residents of this area on Capitol Hill.  I promise that I will always be a strong and effective representative of your interests in the State Senate.

As a long-time resident of Salt Lake County, I have a pretty good idea about what makes this area great and what is important to SD8 residents. But, I don't know everything. I want to hear your ideas. I will LISTEN. I want to hear your opinion on how you would make government more efficient and empower individuals. I promise you that no one will spend more time or effort working to understand what is important to you and how best to represent you. Together we can deal with the important issues that face our state.  Regardless of what side of the political aisle an idea comes from, if it's good policy it will have my support.  I refuse to let partisan bickering get in the way of doing what is right for the people of Utah.

As always, I am only a phone call away.  I have been elected to represent you and the interests of our community.  If you ever have questions or wish to speak with me, feel free to call or email me.  I will continue to update my blog up to and during the next Legislative session.  I look forward to serving you on Capitol Hill.
